Could you please explain the word "antichrist."
Does 2 John 9-11 apply to Christians today in light of 2 Timothy 3:16,
for example - can we use it to teach that we should not allow cults such as "Jehovah's Witness" into our homes, or was it simply an instruction to the faithful sister in the early church to whom John wrote the epistle?
I know these questions are a bit detailed, I thank you very much for your time.

Therefore, to teach that only Jesus came in the flesh denies that the entire Godhead dwelled in Jesus bodily. And this makes one anti-Christ.

God didn't send the Son but the "Father" sent the Son. We have seen that the Christ is both Father and Son; Sender and Sent, Spokesman and Word; Swearer and Sworn by.

My sister says that she believes that Armageddon has to be fought in every generation and in every life. I suppose you could make the argument that Antichrist came in the destruction of Jerusalem and you would have the AD70 doctrine supported. However, I believe that this was just one event; there will be many large and personal antichrists; but, finally, there may be an end- time antichrist who will gather up the total support of most religious groups. There is now a mighty ecumenical effort to "wrap our arms around everyone" and form a new organization for the final Jubilee -- this year or next year. Catholics believe that they will be the "mother church" and indeed Revelation 18 indicates that this may be true.
If antichrist has any brains at all his children will be wiser than the children of light. Therefore, antichrist will try to direct you to some huge, world-wide human being who dominates the earth and forces you to receive the mark of the beast in the forehead before you will be able to participate in his huge kingdom.
Being a contrarian, I tend to look where the antichrist fingers are not pointing. They usually point to the big pope but perhaps the antichrist is the little popes who elevate themselves in every "temple" of Christ by taking over Christ's headship or the group's rights. "If you don't receive my mark in your forehead you will not be a happy buyer or seller of my product."
Paul wrote:
Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. 1 John 2:18 (Last day is the end of a period)

It was prophesied that God would come in the flesh. As Messiah, the man Jesus (Joshua or Jehovah-Saved) would be Spirit-Anointed as proof of His Full Deity. An antichrist is primarily one who denies that the man Jesus Christ is the One God made manifest or visible to the human eye. I believe that those who try to cut God up like a pecan pie into "three people able to stand side by side or face to face to hold a committee meeting to decide who will do what" are antichrists -- denying that the visible Christ was the invisible God having the full authority of Father, Son and Spirit under one name.
Because jokesters often dominate (Paul addressed this in Ephesians 4-5), one joke making the rounds explains how Father and Spirit aced-out the Son and allowed Him to go do the suffering. This is an anti-christ joke.
Christ is the Spirit Anointed "Arm" of God Who was the prophesied Messiah. God is pure or holy Spirit. Therefore, anti-christ promotes a belief or worship which depends upon external rituals. Anti is:
Anti (g473) an-tee'; a prim. particle; opposite, i.e. instead or because of (rarely in addition to): - for, in the room of. Often used in composition to denote contrast, requital, substitution, correspondence, etc.
An anti person is a "because of" or "instead of" person. Furthermore, he is a "play" Christ or a "drama" Christ. He only wants to borrow Christ for a moment, dress Him up, make Him play and dance and then let Him "take off from the dance team as His landing platform" and return to Heaven. In the ancient cobwebs of my mind I can remember a little child who never wanted to do anything according to plan. His only excuse was a whiney, "be - cau' - zzz."
An instead of person always finds excuses for not accepting what Christ said and looks for another understanding. At its heart, this refuses to give Christ the glory for having sense enough to say what He means the way He wants to say it and in the order He wants it said. Two examples of because are:
And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because (anti-) he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. Acts 12:23
While many have a reputation that they are alive, worms are eating them alive and they have already given up the Spirit.
And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because (anti) they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 2 Thessalonians 2:10
At one level, to substitute our words for Christ's words makes us an anti-christ.
While the word "antichrist" is not used, the principle is involved in 2 Thessalonians. Before looking at John it may help to see that Paul agreed with him. Paul wrote:
That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. 2 Thessalonians 2:2
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man (anthropos, just man) of sin (just sin) be revealed, the son of perdition; 2 Thessalonians 2:3
Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. 2 Thessalonians 2:4
While one man came and actually polluted the literal temple in Jerusalem, it had already been condemned and abandoned by Christ. Therefore, he could hardly be the true antichrist. Paul understood that the true temple of Full Deity is the church and its individual members. This "church" is never bigger than a local body of believers meeting together for prayer, mutual edification and the Lord's Supper. Therefore, the only antichrist which really mattered to the faithful Thessalonians was likely to be "one of yourselves" who, like the whiney child, says "you can't, because I can."
Paul knew where the breeding nest of antichrists could be found:
And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church. Acts 20:17
And He warned:
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost (qualified as teachers) hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. Acts 20:28
Being an overseer has only one end-goal: that is to feed the church of God. Lenski notes that "If he is not qualified to teach he is not qualified in any sense." Those who use the authority of the "office" to teach when they are not qualified may be unwitting antichrists or permissive of antichrists.
Paul always warned that the feeders of the church must be apt to teach. This does not mean: "He is as apt to chase a coon as to understand the Word." The teacher-feeders are qualified by having the Mind of Christ, which Paul said in 1 Corinthians 2, is the Holy Spirit or Mind of God. If they presume to be pastors and don't know the word there is no way they can keep the wolves, who look like lambs but eat sheep, out:
For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous (burden-loading) wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Acts 20:29
Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse (distorted) things, to draw away disciples after them. Acts 20:30
The Holy Spirit left us a living example of an antichrist who, not being Spirit or Mind qualified, tries to shift the worship to himself. That was the best he could do. John wrote:
Because that for his names sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. 3 John 1:7
We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth. 3 John 1:8
I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not. 3 John 1:9
Diotrephes, like the many false teachers in Paul's letters, saw godliness as a means of financial gain and to satisfy their lust to be exhalted. While pretending to be a Christian, Diotrephes was really a Zeus secret agent and an antichrist:

As a secret Zeus agent he met the qualifications of being an antichrist: he wanted to be in control and, like the Beast, hand out the little marks to those who obeyed his will. Preeminence is:
Philoproteuo (g5383) fil-op-rote-yoo'-o; from a comp. of 5384 and 4413; to be fond of being first, i.e. ambitious of distinction: - love to have the preeminence.
A diotrephes, and an antichrist, can be identified because he marks only his fellow mercinaries and refuses to even allow the inspired, vocational minister, Paul, to teach:
Epidechomai (g1926) ep-ee-dekh'-om-ahee; from 1909 and 1209; to admit (as a guest or [fig.] teacher): - receive
Not only does the antichrist grasp control even though, at heart, he is not even a Chrisitan, he determines who will participate as teacher and he makes sure that those whom he rejects must be rejected by anyone who wants to keep his little mark on their forehead.
As usual, he cannot tolerate the Word and Paul will set things right when he comes.
Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church. 3 John 1:10
Diotrephes is not just suffering from some mental breakdown: he is evil because he has not, cannot, see God. This is the mark of the antichrist in the modern "temple" of Christ.
Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God. 3 John 1:11
Jesus warned against the Diotrephes and antichrists. These people were the professional program planners because they kept the Word from being taken seriously:
For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on mens shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. Matthew 23:4
On the other hand,
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 1 John 5:3
In its modern sense, antichrist is a Dominion Theologian. The sincere "ministers" sees themselves as teachers and servants of the local body and as its evangelists out preaching to the lost. However, new men are being taught that they are the "pastors" and therefore in charge of the local flock -- spitting in the face of those who feed, cloth and house their family. He, in fact, sits (rather than going into all the world) in the "temple" and all external signs are that he believes that he is the local Christ.
The "burden loader" was not doing these things for the sheep of the flock. Rather, he saw the flock as serving him and the only way he could ever make this happen would be to draw them away from Christ to follow him. This, of course, would make him an antichrist and a sheep eater.
These men have adopted the methods of Change Agentry which demands that they must move you out of your comfort zone to plan your life and worship for you. They are anti whatever you want to do. They are the because enemies of the quiet, body of Christ.
They always fail and fall but never without eating a lot of good lambs and being consumed by their own "heart" worms.
Perdition into which they fall is:
Apolei (g684) ap-o'-li-a; from a presumed der. of 622; ruin or loss (phys., spiritual or eternal): - damnable (-nation), destruction, die, perdition, * perish, pernicious ways, waste.
Remember, that there will be two groups at the end time. The first will be the great massed groups gathered ecumenically to "assist Christ in his now but not yet kingdom." They will be the noisy group making it very difficult for the honest disciples to find and push their way past them to get into the grace of Christ and into His true temple -- the church. Jesus warned of them by saying:
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Mt.7:13
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Mt.7:14
Strait is: Stenos (g4728) sten-os'; prob. from the base of 2476; narrow (from obstacles standing close about): - strait.
Our antichrists will put themselves squarely between people and Christ. They will, in fact, be the ones who make the gate strait or hard to find. They will be consumed with plans and programs as antichrist because Christ came to remove the burden of "anxiety created by religious ritual."
Remember, that Jesus warned that the many of the clergy will be there to "take away the keys to knowledge" (Luke 11:52). So for every one honest preacher of the gospel, the many will always be little antichrists or agents of Satan's plans. When he exalts himself the Greek is:
Apodeiknumi (g584) ap-od-ike'-noo-mee; from 575 and 1166; to show off, i.e. exhibit: fig. to demonstrate, i.e. accredit: - (ap-) prove, set forth, shew.
Christ set Himself as Full Deity (Col 2:9) Who laid aside His majesty and glory and put on the garment of flesh; came to earth as God's Right Arm as Intercessor (Isaiah 59:16); demonstrated the Christ image of Suffering Servant; and then returned to His throne to restore Himself as Spirit God. God was demonstrated in "righteous living and social justice" and never in ceremonial.
As soon as Christ left, antichrists (Satan, Devil, Serpent, Lucifer) in the bodies of the false teachers began to flood the world with anti-truth to try to wash away or drown the Mother (church) and the Son (Christ). At a very local level this would happen in Jerusalem and Judaea:
For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. 2 Thessalonians 2:7
And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: 2 Thessalonians 2:8
There is nothing more crushing to the antichrists than the Word of Christ. Jesus said "my words are Spirit and Life" (John 6:63). Therefore, when the Word is spoken they squirm like Dracula exposed to sunlight.
Paul spoke of these same enemies of Christ to the Corinthians:
But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 2 Corinthians 11:3
Simplicity is from the Greek:
Haplotes (g572) hap-lot'-ace; from 573; singleness, i.e. (subj.) sincerity (without dissimulation or self-seeking), or (obj.) generosity (copious bestowal): - bountifulness, liberal (-ity), simplicity, singleness.
Christ's attitude was simplicity. Therefore, one who works without self-seeing or generosity is an anti-christ.
Antichrist attacks the people of Christ at three levels: another Jesus, another spirit and another gospel. And Paul says, in effect, because fools love to be fooled, you just love lies:
For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. 2 Corinthians 11:4KJV
Or:
You seem so gullible: you believe whatever anyone tells you even if he is preaching about another Jesus than the one we preach, or a different spirit than the Holy Spirit you received, or shows you a different way to be saved. You swallow it all. 2 Corinthians 11:4LIV
This warning would not be issued unless Corinth was flooded with people who would preach an anti- or because gospel. It will always be popular and the Words of Christ will be crushed and many -- often the leaders according to Paul -- love to be fooled and will keep the sunlight off the enemies of Christ.
Another Jesus
Because "Spirit" is often translated as an infectious person who creates effects similar to too much new wine, the non-dancing Jesus is fired and any self-effort which stimulates "feelings" of any kind is believed to be the Holy Spirit moving around inside and guiding the body. This is true even by many who do not believe that they are "God Incarnated."
In the end times (perhaps) has come performance worship (singing, clapping, instruments, dance) by worship teams. By this, we know that people are elevating themselves above the gentle Christ. It is becoming popular for these teams to claim to be mediators and that "we provide a platform upon which God lands." This would be blasphemy but perhaps God doesn't punish the insane.
Along with performance worshippers, as Clement said, "Drunk on ignorance," came performance preaching. These performers believe that they personally have the style to "regenerate people through external means," just as Nimrod believed.
We all know people who in fact do exalt themselves over Christ. Every time we can see a famous brother and cannot see through him to see Christ then he has become a wall to keep us from seeing Christ. After all of the visual insults they will (elevating themselves further) say, "I don't want you to see me but Christ." Well, you know that he is not telling the truth.
In contrast to the false bright lights (Lucifer in the O.T.), the true minister is not "style over content." Paul probably had in mind the "many" as the personification of antichrist in Corinth
But I do not think I am in the least inferior to those "super-apostles." 2 Corinthians 11:5NIV
But though I be rude in speech, yet not in knowledge; but we have been throughly made manifest among you in all things. 2 Corinthians 11:6
Was it a sin for me to lower myself in order to elevate you by preaching the gospel of God to you free of charge? 2 Corinthians 11:7
These men who saw preaching purely as an occupation and did not really love people or the truth were superior which, in Greek, is:

And these things, brethren, I have in a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for your sakes; that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written, that no one of you be puffed up for one against another. 1 Corinthians 4:6
Because Christ demonstrated a humble God, those who were puffed up were in fact antichrist. Remember, that the antichrist was the one:
Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. 2 Thessalonians 2:4
(g5259) raise themself over, become haughty, exalted beyond measure.
Those who "rest upon" the church or temple and believe that they are the pinacle of the pyramid with everyone supporting them and their plans are exalting themselves over God's plans and therefore over God Himself.
Another Spirit
While there is an evil power at war with God Who is Pure Spirit, antichrist does not have the power except through his agents. The serpent (serpent, devil, satan or any deceiver Rev. 12:9) in Greek is:
Ophis (g3789) of'-is; prob. from 3700 (through the idea of sharpness of vision); a snake, figurative of a type of sly cunning, an artful malicious person, espec. Satan: - serpent.
As Full Deity, Lord Jesus Christ, was Spirit in a personal sense. That is He is God Incarnate. In the sense that it is available to us, Jesus said that His Word is the Spirit:
It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63
Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter (external), but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. 2 Corinthians 3:6
This "another spirit" or the "because spirit" or the "instead of spirit" has been stolen from the African "Little man (spirit) in the big man (me)" and fuels all charismatic, self-elevating religion. By making the third person (people) of the Godhead into the "God of this dispensation" and retiring Father and Son to a chair, they, in fact, are preaching another Christ. In their mind, Father god was the evil god of the Old Testament, Jesus was the God of the New Testament or "bible" period, but Holy Spirit is God of this "the dispensation of the Holy Spirit." This artificial teaching then gives them the power to be guided without the use of the Word.
We can sort out the antichrists by counting the God words versus the my words.
Paul understood that when he was guided by the Spirit it was "Jesus whom thou persecutest." The Spirit which rested upon Jesus was like a Rock Dove or a pigeon who carried messages for Noah and has always been used for sending messages in the written word. This Spirit was prophesied by Isaiah:
AND there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: Isaiah 11:1
And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; Isaiah 11:2
And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: Isaiah 11:3
Paul noted that those qualified to be the overseers for the purpose of feeding the flock will be qualified by this Holy Spirit which is the Mind of Christ (2 Cor. 2).
Any "spirit" or mental disposition not devoted to these qualities which rested upon Christ may also be antichrists.
Another Gospel
The many antichrists never get to "sit on the church" without invitation. When the church abandons the love of the truth and is willing to smash any effort at education like a bug, they have invited antichrist to come in and "fool" the fools.
Remember that Paul noted that the Corinthians thought of themselves as kings and already reigning. The false teachers incited them into bareheaded "prophesying" which, in the historical sense, was singing and playing instruments while pretending to speak for God. Paul said in chapter 14 that they were just speaking into the air. They really loved the "because spirit" because it was just like the paganism they just left. However, they were deluded or seduced and their assemblies were doing more harm than good (11:17NIV).
If you can exhibit power, even laughable displays, some people will love to be fooled. Drama, after all, works because "we know that it isn't true." So the super speakers were really antichrists like the ultimate false teacher:
Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 2 Thessalonians 2:9
And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 2 Thessalonians 2:10
And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 2 Thessalonians 2:11-12
You know that you have another spirit, another Christ and another gospel when the minor antichrist will suffer any pain, go to any length and make any effort to keep the words of Christ cut up into little disassociated tidbits.
What is the true gospel which the because people reject?
The baptism of John was part of God's "good news" for the Jews in preparation for the new "temple" or church of Christ. Christian baptizm would be identical to the first stage baptism of John but it would be in the name of Jesus Christ.
Those who rejected John's baptism rejected the counsel of God for their lives:
But John forbade him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? Matthew 3:14
And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh (be conspicious) us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. Matthew 3:15
The "Christ" purpose in being baptism was to "fulfill all righteousness" which means to fully preach baptism.
And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God (showed regard to), being baptized with the baptism of John. Luke 7:29
But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him. Luke 7:30
While people had many reasons for not being baptized, the leaders were clearly antichrists by being anti His commandments. Fittingly, this is a because excuse.
To establish His church (temple) Christ defined the gospel as including baptism as the response for repentant believers. He said in several ways:
1. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Matthew 28:19
Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Matthew 28:20

Remember that it is faith and justifying God or showing respect to God which saves. Those who do not show regard to God are lost already.
And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God (showed regard to), being baptized with the baptism of John. Luke 7:29

And this is available to all people:

he that feareth (stand in awe) him,

is accepted with him. Acts 10:35

Of course, those who have a different view of baptism think that I am antichrist and being mature, they are able to say so. So, make up your own mind.
I am forwarding this to you via a web page because e-mail it too difficult to format. I will look at the word antichrist in John's letters in another article. However, I believe that to reject Christ as God having come in the flesh is to reject what this means in revealing the True Spirit, the True Christ and the True Gospel. Therefore, I agree that any one who has an instead of or play form of worship or in fact any view contrary to what Christ clearly taught is a little antichrist agent of the big antichrist
