"However, singing followed by prayer, reading of God's word, and a spoken message is our most common format. Because of our Church of Christ HERITAGE, singing is without instrumental accompaniment, following the practice of the early church. While some of our students are newcomers to this worship experience, many students come to admire its beauty and simplicity.

Pattern of the Civil-Military-Clergy whom God abandoned to carry out the "worship of the starry host" (Acts7) including Apollo, Apollyon or Abbadown from Egypt.  God did not command, king, kingdom, temple, priests and the Jacob-cursed Levites.  They were ABANDONED because of the Instrumental-Trinitarian-Perverted idolatry at Mount Sinai.  The Levites made a loud crasing noise while goats or INFANTS were put through the HOLOCAUST.

kenneth-starr-plans-to-join-baptist-church/ But in an interview with The Baptist Standard after accepting the Baylor job, Starr said he began having questions about age 18 about certain Church of Christ practices, including the lack of instrumental music. He said the McLean Bible Church, where he was active from 1978 to 2004, continued to capture his attention and remained his “home congregation” after he left Washington.
“I’m comfortable with the articulation of Baptist distinctives — including the role of baptism,” Starr told the Standard, which noted that Churches of Christ, unlike Baptists, teach that baptism is essential for salvation. Starr also told the Baptist paper, “I feel a great sense of kinship and fellowship with the Baptist community.”
Provost Darryl Tippens said Pepperdine’s reputation among law schools has risen in recent years.
Darryl Tippens: A strong argument for a cappella singing is to experience it in its full power. If one never experiences the soul-stirring power of human voices joyously united in song,
        theological argument
alone will scarcely sustain the tradition.
If we are honest, we will admit that our own inattention
and poor choices work against the survival of a cappella singing.

The fact is that division occurred between the Disciples of Christ -- Christians. Churches of Christ were never owned by the Christian Churches which sected out of the Disciples beginning in 1927 and ending in 1971.  Long before the 1832 handshake where Stone boasted that "the reformers have come over to us" Alexander Campbell denied that any kind of organized unity could never happen.
In 1890 the first convention was called at Chattanooga to organize the state society. The only churches in the state of Tennessee were those who had already adopted the organ in their worship. The Christian Standard pumped up the news and "it is reported that the brethren in Nashville, Tennessee are desirous of entertaining our National Convention next year."

This of course was just two congregations. A survey showed that out of 2500 members in Nashville, less than one hundred wanted the society.

Lipscomb noted that among the Society people "the Bible is as popular as last year's almanac."

"The supporters of the missionary society organized the Tennessee State Missionary Convention on October 6, 1890, with one purpose in mind, as stated by J. H. Garrison. He said at that time:

"We will take Tennessee for organized mission work...within five years

Tarta^r-os , the nether world generally,

And altogether the ancient philosoj)hy of the Greeks appears to have been very much addicted to music; and on this account they judged Apollo to have been the most musical and the wisest of the gods, and Orpheus of the demigods. And they called every one who devoted himself to the study of this art a sophist, as
Aeschylus does in the verse where he says — And then the sophist sweetly struck the lyre.

Musae (Mousai). In Greek mythology the Muses were originally the nymphs of springs, whose waters gave inspiration, such as Hippocrené, Castalia, etc.; then goddesses of song in genera. They are all female and are considered goddesses dwelling in Olympus, who at the meals of the gods sing sweetly to the lyre of Apollo. They are the nine daughters of Zeus.

APOLLON LEADER OF THE MUSES

Monterey Church of Christ Elders: The guitar, keyboard and drums back one of Monterey Church of Christ’s WORSHIP leaders on Sunday.

READ or SPEAK the WORD is the only "worship" concept because Jesus ordained a School of His Word only.

Apostates use the Greek PSALLO (both ugly and perverted) as authority.  However, Psallo allows only "plucking a string or pubic hair with your FINGERS and never with a guitar psallo.  Psallo is SILENT and has no musical content.  You cannot psallo a keybord and you cannot psallo a DRUM.

Catullus - Poem 63

9 Use a drum: The priests of Cybele, who were either eunuchs, or persons of effeminate and worthless character, walked in their processions beating a "tympanum." a "drum" or "tambourine." The Captain, by his question, contemptuously implies that Agorastocles is such a character. See the Truer lentus, l. 608, and the Note.
a timbrel, etc., as a figure of something effeminate, enervating: tympana eloquentiae,Quint. 5, 12, 21:in manu tympanum est,Sen. Vit. Beat. 13, 3.—a timbrel, etc.,

Clement of Alexandrian notes why emasculated men could not be priests:

"One of these charges the Egyptians thus: "If you believe them to be gods, do not mourn or bewail them; and if you mourn and bewail them, do not any more regard them as gods." And another, taking an image of Hercules made of wood (for he happened most likely to be cooking something at home), said,

"Come now, Hercules; now is the time to undergo for us this thirteenth labour, as you did the twelve for Eurystheus, and make this ready for Diagoras," and so cast it into the fire as a log of wood. For the extremes of ignorance are atheism and superstition, from which we must endeavour to keep.

And do you not see Moses, the hierophant of the truth, enjoining that no eunuch, or emasculated man, or son of a harlot, should enter the congregation?
By the two
first he alludes to the impious custom by which men were deprived both of divine energy and of their virility;

and by the third, to him who, in place of the only real God, assumes many gods falsely so called,-as the son of a harlot, in ignorance of his true father, may claim many putative fathers.

Monterey Church of Christ Elders: The a cappella TRADITION in Churches of Christ is rooted in Scripture and the early Christian church, said Brian Starr, Lubbock Christian University executive vice president

The Sistine Chapel or Caper or Cappella rejected instruments in the only official MASS by the Pope until 1911.  This Chapel had used males singing FALSETTO like the Jews.  However, an exiled Pope heard the CASTRATED opera singers from France.  They sang in the CAPPELA to please the Pope.

However the PLACE was the CAPPELA but their style of singing was called ORGANUM or after the Pipe Organ which was only in the rich Cathedrals.  Organum meant that all of the "team" sang the same NOTE where "melody" could be one or two notes.

God didn't supple a single verse which was LYRICAL or to be sung TO the Lyre.  Jesus SPOKE the Spirit without measure or METRON meaing musical meter.

There is not a single Command, Example or remote Inference of God having His people ASSEMBLE to sing with or without instruments.

THERE IS NOTHING MUSICAL IN GOD'S WORD

Music.  Cantillation signs guide the reader in applying a chant to Biblical readings. This chant is technically regarded as a ritualized form of speech intonation rather than as a musical exercise like the singing of metrical hymns: for this reason Jews always speak of saying or reading a passage rather than of singing it. (In Yiddish the word is leynen 'read', derived from Latin legere, giving rise to the Jewish English verb "to leyn".)

http://www.piney.com/Cantillation.2.html

The Philipedium: In most western European languages, the word for “read” starts with the letter “L”. These languages can be divided into two main groups — those of Latin origin and those of Germanic origin. In each of the Latin languages (Italian, Spanish, French, etc.), the modern word is derived from legere, the Latin word for “read”. The Italian word is still leggere, essentially unchanged from the Latin. In the other Romance languages, the “g” sound was lost, and so we have leer in Spanish, ler in Portuguese, and lire in French.

(Note: The Old Testament understands that instrumental music--called NOISE--was authorized only in certain dedicatory or purification rituals associated with the temple and with Jerusalem. Without both there was never any rationale for instrument to make a great crashing sound during animal sacrifices.)

"At the dedication of the later edifice, the priests blew the trumpets at the same time that the Levites sang and played upon instruments of music,

so as 'to make one sound;' but it is evident that on that great occasion of rejoicing, what was aimed at was not musical harmony, but a powerful crash of jubilant sound. We are shut up to the conclusion that

there was nothing in the tabernacle-worship, as ordered by Moses, which could be justly characterized as instrumental music." (George Girardeau, Instrumental Music, p. 29 - a Presbyterian)

Monterey Church of Christ Elders:

“The early leaders of the (Church of Christ) movement took a high view of Scripture
and, interpreting it within a generally conservative framework,
they sought to restore the worship practices found in the New Testament church,”
he wrote in an email. “From that stance, they typically embraced a capella as their worship style.”

We are afflicted and want to say such people are Bible and Ethically Illiterate.  However, Paul in Ephesians 4 says of the cunning craftsmen or sophists--speakers, singers, instrument players are marked as LYING IN WAIT TO DECEIVE.

John Calvin on Instruments clearly understood and observed by presbyterians.

Does any one object, that music is very useful for awakening the minds of men and moving their hearts? I own it;

but we should always take care that no corruption creep in, which might both defile the pure worship of God and involve men in superstition. Moreover, since the Holy Spirit expressly warns us of this danger by the mouth of Paul,

to proceed beyond what we are there warranted by him is not only, I must say, unadvised zeal, but wicked and perverse obstinacy.

Again, Calvin notes that: "We know that our Lord Jesus Christ has appeared, and by His advent has abolished these legal shadows.

Instrumental music, we therefore maintain, was only tolerated on account of the times and the people, because they were as boys, as the sacred Scripture speaketh, whose condition required these puerile rudiments.

But in gospel times we must not have recourse to these unless we wish to destroy the evangelical perfection and to obscure the meridian light which we enjoy in Christ our Lord." (Calvin's Commentary on the Thirty-third Psalm, and on 1 Sam. 18:1-9).

It has always been common among the advocates of this Popish mode of worship,

to meet the objections of simple minded Protestants to the organ,
with the retort that their scruples were the relics of fanatical prejudice,
and rustic ignorance.

It is not strange that men, such as the present advocates of the organ in Presbyterian churches in America, should bring such a charge against such men; many of them educated amidst the richest specimens of the fine arts in the old world, their youth imbued with the spirit of a gorgeous and poetic age?

"Philodemos considered it paradoxical that music should be regarded as veneration of the gods while musicians were paid for performing this so-called veneration. Again, Philodemus held as self-deceptive the view that music mediated religious ecstasy. He saw the entire condition induced by the noise of cymbals and tambourines as a disturbance of the spirit. (Paul called it mad or insane)

He found it significant that, on the whole, only women and effeminate men fell into this folly."

"According to Philo, the gods of the pagans exploit this weakness of men. For the sake of a better effect, and with the intention of more easily cheating their devotes, that they have set their lies to melodies, rhythms and meters.." (Father Johannes Quasten, p. 52)

To explain the tradition, many pastors point to New Testament Scriptures like Ephesians 5:19-20, which reads, “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (NIV 1984).

Absent in the New Testament are explicit references to instrumental worship, pointing to a Christian standard of a capella worship, some argue.

Monterey, too, plans to keep its 8:30 a.m. a capella assembly because of continued connection to the service and the worship tradition, said the church’s senior minister, Barry Stephens.

Going instrumental

Monterey’s decision to include an instrumental worship assembly
was the culmination of years of Bible study
        and discernment, Stephens said.

Numerous Scriptures, like those in 2 Chronicles 7 and 29, Psalms 33, 92 and 150, affirmed instrumental worship, the leaders decided.

Furthermore, New Testament Scriptures traditionally used to support a cappella worship
did not speak specifically to the context of gathered worship.
And if even if they did, the Greek word translated as “music” or “melody” did not refer exclusively to a cappella worship.

Once Monterey leaders had Scriptural grounding, they turned to another question:
Was instrumental worship right for Monterey?
They decided it was; the practice could help them further spread the Gospel
and offer members with non-vocal musical talents a forum for offering their gifts to God. Leaders then guided members through biblical study, with the church opting in the end to have an instrumental service.

Between 35 and 40 members departed during the year-and-a-half move toward the service.
Some left on grounds of conviction while others did so because the
10:45 a.m. service would become instrumental and they preferred a late morning a capella service.

However, Stephens noted, about the same number of people have joined during the 18-month period - including people returning to the Church of Christ fold after years away.

Overall, the response has been positive, he maintained. People participate just as enthusiastically and sing just was wholeheartedly as they did before the instruments were used.

On a recent Sunday, congregants packed the assembly hall, singing along to percussive and meditative hymns alike.

Fractured fellowship

When Monterey Church of Christ debuted its new service on Feb. 5, Hicks preached a sermon titled, “We Cannot Fellowship the Lubbock Monterey Church of Christ,” about the spiritual stakes of instrumental worship. The same morning, he discussed the topic “Surveying the Error of Instrumental Music in Worship” on his radio program on KFYO. He later burned the sermon and radio program on CDs and sent the recordings to Monterey’s elders and as many Lubbock Church of Christ elders as he had addresses for.

In the sermon, Hicks encouraged Southside members to end fellowship with Monterey - even if family members were part the offending congregation.

Ending spiritual ties with Monterey was difficult but necessary because of the potential effect on souls, Hicks said.

The issue is not about a piano in worship, but rather about the authority of Scripture. The matter is of such importance, the preacher wants to debate the matter publicly with Monterey leaders, Hicks said. Stephens said such a debate would not help further Monterey’s mission of reaching those who do not believe in Jesus.

Though Mannon believes firmly in a capella worship, he takes a less hard-line stance than Hicks.

“There’s a fellowship, certainly, that’s based on Jesus Christ,” Mannon said. “And I think as we talk about that - about this whole issue of instrumental music - I think that that’s a fundamental thing to emphasize because it becomes easy to get sidetracked and to place more emphasis on this matter of instruments or non-instruments. All of a sudden, then, Christ is secondary, and I want to make sure that’s never the case.

Monterey Ex Church of Christ Elders turned Wolves.
“Churches of Christ are autonomous,
and so I’m presuming that when churches make a decision to incorporate instruments in some way at some point,
they’re doing so very thoughtfully. No
        and prayerfully
        and with a Godly intention.”

-Autonomism The term autonomia/Autonome is derived from the Greek "auto'-nomo*s" referring to someone or something which lives by his/her own rule. Autonomy, in this sense, is not independence. While independence refers to an autarcic kind of life,

Aristotle thus considered that only BEASTS or gods could be independent and live apart from the polis ("community"),
while Kant defined the Enlightenment by autonomy of thought and the famous "Sapere aude" ("dare to know)
