Max Lucado: Salvation by Trust? Max Lucado: All they needed to do was to trust him to save them. All those who believe this are reborn!Part One The Thief on the Cross
Part Two: Baptism is just a pledge that you have been saved?
Salvation by Trust Only or Prayer Only? 12/5/02 See how the GA, Shelly, Lucado Trithism as A Family of Gods leads naturally to despising the counsel of the human Jesus and how Baptists Baptism denies that Christ came FULLY in the flesh.
The red type is Max Lucado's statement of salvation by trust or faith only. Our review is in black and other quotations are in blue.
THE RESPONSE: TRUST (Getting on the right bus.)
Max Lucado: What does God want you to do? He wants you to get on his bus. How is this done? Three simple steps: admit, agree, accept.
1. Admit that God has not been first place in your life and ask him to forgive your sins.
........ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrong. 1 John 1:9John is not writing that CONFESSION ONLY saves us: these people had been saved long ago. Forever afterward we are all accepted by living FAITHFULLY. Of John's Baptism which is also for the remission of sins
And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. Matt 3:6
This makes no sense if they were saved by faith.
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Matt 3:7
........ Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: Matt 3:8Max will say that:
Max Lucado: To all who received him, he gave the right to become children of God.
All they needed to do was to trust him to save them.
All those who believe this are reborn! However, RECEIVED neither means trust nor belief. Receiving Christ was to associate with Him and come to agree with His FULL DEITY and COUNSEL OF GOD for our lives which began with John's Baptism FOR or in order the remission of sins.
John shows how that ASSOCIATION takes place to non-witnesses through their written words.
THAT which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 1 John 1:1
(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) 1 John 1:2
That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you,
that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 1 John 1:3
Fellowship is like RECEIVING in that it means a partnership, participation, communication.
John wrote to baptized believers. He did not tell them how to be saved or have their sins remitted:
And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. 1 John 1:4
The blood of Christ continues to cleanse from sin:
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 1 John 1:6
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 1 John 1:7
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1:8
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 1 John 1:10
MY little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 1 John 2:1
And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:2
Receiving or knowing or fellowship is not just TRUSTING and automatically have our sins remitted and regenerated into a NEW CREATURE. Rather,
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 1 John 2:3
He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 1 John 2:4
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 1 John 2:5
The FIRST COMMANDMENT of the Gospel is to REPENT and BE BAPTIZED. Only then does God give us a new or A holy spirit. Therefore, John is NOT speaking of initial conversion but how we might GROW based on faith and faith has no meaning unless we CONTINUE to keep His commandments.
There can be NO going on to perfection if we have not obeyed the first command: "Don't reject my counsel by refusing to be baptized."
Max Lucado: 2. Agree that Jesus died to pay for your sins and that he rose from the dead and is alive today.
If you confess that Jesus is your Lord, and you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name [Jesus] by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12
Romans 10:9 has some other verses attached to it.
But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; Romans 10:8
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Romans 10:9
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:10
This confession is not EIS or in order to but we confess to the Savior:
Soteria (g4991) so-tay-ree'-ah; fem. of a der. of 4990 as (prop. abstr.) noun; rescue or safety (phys. or mor.): - deliver, health, salvation, save, saving.
Soter (g4990) so-tare'; from 4982; a deliverer, i.e. God or Christ: - saviour. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. Romans 10:11
For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. Romans 10:12
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13
Call on is to take the name of Jesus Christ. All secular baptisms involving John coming into discipleship to Peter the Tentmaker means that the disciple takes the name of the Master Teacher:
Epikaleomai (g1941) ep-ee-kal-eh'-om-ahee; mid. from 1909 and 2564; to entitle; by impl. to invoke (for aid, worship, testimony, decision, etc.): - appeal (unto), call (on, upon), surname.
In the Great Commission the NAME upon which they called was Jesus Christ. Name is singular:
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Mt.28:19
In Peter's Pentecost sermon he quoted Joel:
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts 2:21
After Peter finished his GOSPEL SERMON:
Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Acts 2:36
Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Acts 2:37
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38

Therefore, Calling on the name of the Lord was AT Baptism where we REQUEST a new or holy spirit to replace the old one which cannot see God.
Jesus insisted that at Baptism we DISCARD any NAME of God except Jesus Christ Who is Full Deity (Col 2:9). Simple BELIEF or TRUST does not CALL on the name of JESUS which is the Only name by which we can be saved.
Therefore, even to minimize the direct command of Jesus to CALL UPON HIS Name at baptism is to REJECT or DESPISE the counsel of God delivered by the man Jesus.
Calling on the name of God is something the candidate does: He APPEALS to God for a clear conscience or A holy spirit.
Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 1 Peter 3:21
An appeal does not mean that baptism is a SIGN of the salvation you already have. If so then you are saved without the Holy Spirit. Rather, Paul says that at baptize we REQUEST from God a new spirit. That request is CALLING ON THE NAME of the Lord. It is not a sign of salvation but:
Eperotao (g1905) ep-er-o-tah'-o; from 1909 and 2065; to ask for, i.e. inquire, seek: - ask (after, questions), demand, desire, question.
This is quite identical to what Paul wrote to the Hebrews:
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Heb.10:22
Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) Heb. 10:23
It was pure, naked PRIDE which kept the self-sufficient clergy from CALLING on Jesus Christ. This would mean that they had to SUBMERGE all of the profosorial authority under a man they saw as a common criminal.
They said, like Max and the Baptists, that OUR RELATIONSHIP TO GOD is what saves us: we are predestinated Jews!
If we see dipping in water as the MEANS by which WE must now be made free of sin, then WE have to admit that CHRIST COME FULLY IN THE FLESH has spiritual power.
It's time for you to begin hearing the voice of God speak to you in those moments to tell you, |
Baptism is the profession of our faith by calling on the Lord. The Pharisees and doctors of the Law refused to Justify and therefore called God a liar by REFUSING to be baptized as God's predestinated plan to save mankind.
The same Paul who wrote Romans recorded his own conversion:
And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Ac.22:16
Contrary to the virtual hate for water, Paul recorded the fact that baptism is where our sins are WASHED AWAY as we call upon the name of the Lord.
Max Lucado: 3. Accept God's free gift of salvation. Don't try to earn it.
For it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9
Everything is free: certainly salvation cannot be earned but it can be rejected.
Notice that the gift of God is His power to allow us to do impossible things:
And also that every man should eat and drink, and
enjoy the good of all his labour,
it is the gift of God. Ecclesiastes 3:13Solomon was wise and said:
Behold that which I have seen:it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion. Ecclesiastes 5:18
Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and
to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God. Ecclesiastes 5:19
Therefore, we must assuredly acknowledge that salvation is not something we can do as works to earn a wage of which we can boast:
For by grace are ye SAVED through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the GIFT of God. Ephesians 2:8
But true BOASTING accrues to those who radically translate the inspired Word to agree with the ancient pagan "believer's baptism." If we just accept the WILL OF GOD for our lives then we don't call God a LIAR. If prostitutes and sinners can be saved then assuredly there is no boasting. However, the professional clergy BOASTED of their own power by rejecting the simple command to be baptized.
The SUBJECT is SAVED and the fact is that IT IS A GIFT. The subject is NOT faith. Remember that the SAME WRITER said that "faith comes by hearing the WORD." Sure, the Word is a gift but Christ isn't interested in you if you don't JUSTIFY HIM by believing that He speaks as God.
Further, SALVATION is not something you can DO by works because then God would OWE you salvation as a WAGE for your WORKS of which you could BOAST:
Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:9
But, be warned that NOT believing what Scripture says connecting baptism and salvation is NOT something of which people should do, but do.
The GENTILES as the SUBJECT of this passage (and not regeneration) were once WITHOUT God in the world. Paul is not telling alien sinners what to do to be saved. These people are ALREADY IN Christ and the same Paul says that they were baptized INTO Christ as the meaning of the Spirit promise made TO Abraham by the Spirit of Christ (1 Peter 1:11).
Therefore, Paul is speaking of RECONCILING those who are ALREADY IN THE BODY of Christ. In almost all or perhaps all of the FAITH ONLY passages Paul is speaking to BAPTIZED BELIEVERS who must nevertheless be justified and saved or made whole on a daily basis based on their FAITH rather than works rituals such as SINGING in direct opposition to Paul's Direct command to TEACH using "that which is written."
Paul preached the gospel to include those FAR AWAY as the Gentiles who were far away geographically and alienated from the Jews. Peter, Paul and others took the gospel to those FAR AWAY and baptized them to make ALL NEAR to God by being IN Christ.
But now, IN Christ Jesus, ye who sometimes were far off are MADE NIGH by the blood of Christ. Ephesians 2:13
Now, why not stop there? Why not say that they were MADE NIGH the instant Christ shed His blood? But, that would be changing the SUBJECT and silencing Paul before he finished speaking.
For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Ephesians 2:14
Having abolished in his flesh the ENMITY, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; Ephesians 2:15
And that he might RECONCILE both unto God IN one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: Ephesians 2:16
Why not stop there? Why not insist that we WERE reconciled UNTO GOD by being IN one body simply by being crucified? Don't stop Paul!
And came and preached peace to you which were AFAR OFF, and to them that were nigh. Ephesians 2:17
For THROUGH him we both have ACCESS by one Spirit unto the Father Ephesians 2:18
Remember all of the symbolism: we receive A holy spirit, we ask God for a Clear Consciousness or co-perception. Paul now implicates what CHRIST THE SPIRIT does as the CIRCUMCISION OF THE HEART so that BOTH Jew and Gentile can be One IN Christ and Paul said that we are BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST as the meaning of FAITH in Gal 3:26, 27.
Even after baptism we WALK BY FAITH. However, one cannot get INTO or in connection with Christ without baptism.
For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:26
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Gal 3:27This does not speak of FAITH ONLY but baptism means that we have faith in the OPERATION OF GOD who CUTS OFF the old body of sin WHEN we obey "that form of doctrine" which identifies with when God raised Jesus from the dead. Faith in Faith has no value unless we have faith that God can wash us, sprinkle us, cleanse our UNHOLY spirit and give us a HOLY spirit or give us a clear conscience or co-perception. There simply is NO FAITH passage which is said to do those things.
The works of God without human hands is clearly stated to be at the time and place of water baptism. If we minimize baptism then we REPUDIATE the faith of THE OPERATION OF GOD who gives us "A" holy spirit, a clear conscience or makes us a new man.
If Jesus says "jump off the building" then we are JUSTIFIED when we jump by faith. When we are REGENERATED by GOD ONLY and have been saved 20 years, if we hear Christ speaking to us in the Bible and telling us to help the poor then we are "saved by faith" or "made whole" or given good spiritual health WHEN our faith obeys. Being married 45 years does not mean that I am NOT justified or APPROVED by my wife WHEN I do what pleases her or prove my trust in her. However, we were MARRIED and became FAMILY at one point in time. Sure it was based on faith but faith didn't make us married.
Max Lucado: To all who received him, he gave the right to become children of God.
........ All they needed to do was to trust him to save them.
........ All those who believe this are reborn!
........ not a physical rebirth...but from the will of God. John 1:12-13But, let's not put our faith in Max to read the Word and repeat it faithfully. I have the POWER to do many things. However, I choose NOT to do them. Jesus said: "If you believe that I am the WAY or the DOOR into the spiritual real then you HAVE THE POWER to enter that door." However, that does not mean that I ACCEPT the counsel of Christ for my life.
Let's back up and see that NOT RECEIVING Christ means REJECTING the direct command to be BAPTIZED.
He came unto his own, and his own received him not. John 1:11
If the Pharisees had believed they had the POWER to become the children of God. But the Jews RECEIVED HIM NOT. That is they disbelieved and therefore:
But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him. Luke 7:30
He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true. John 3:33
For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God:
for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. John 3:34The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. John 3:35
He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. John 3:36
WHEN therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, John 4:1
(Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,) John 4:2
He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. John 4:3
All of those who followed Jesus as learners or pupils were baptized when they accepted the counsel of God for their lives. Disciple is:
Mathetes (g3101) math-ay-tes'; from 3129; a learner, i.e. pupil: - disciple.
If rejecting John's Baptism is DESPISING God then how can Christian Baptism which adds the gift of A holy spirit be any less rejected without DESPISING God?
Atheteo (g114) ath-et-eh'-o; from a compound of 1 (as a neg. particle) and a der. of 5087; to set aside, i.e. (by impl.) to disesteem, neutralize or violate: - cast off, despise, disannul, frustrate, bring to nought, reject.
And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. Mk.7:9
He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. Jn.12:48
He that despised Moses law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Heb.10:28
Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. Ju.1:8
From this now learn a proper understanding of the subject, and how to answer the question what Baptism is, namely thus, that it is not mere ordinary water,
- but water comprehended in God's Word and command, and sanctified thereby,
- so that it is nothing else than a divine water; not that the water in itself is nobler than other water,
- but that God's Word and command are added.
Therefore it is pure wickedness and blasphemy of the devil that now our new spirits, to mock at Baptism, omit from it God's Word and institution, and look upon it in no other way than as water which is taken from the well, and then
blather and say: How is a handful of water to help the soul?
Aye, my friend, who does not know that water is water if tearing things asunder is what we are after? But how dare you thus interfere with God's order, and tear away the most precious treasure with which God has connected and enclosed it, and which He will not have separated?
For the kernel in the water is God's Word or command and the name of God which is a treasure greater and nobler than heaven and earth.
Comprehend the difference, then, that Baptism is quite another thing than all other water; not on account of the natural quality,
but because something more noble is here added;
for God Himself stakes His honor His power and might on it.Therefore it is not only natural water, but a divine, heavenly, holy, and blessed water, and in whatever other terms we can praise it, --
all on account of the Word, which is a heavenly, holy Word, that no one can sufficiently extol, for it has, and is able to do, all that God is and can do [since it has all the virtue and power of God comprised in it].
Thomas Campbell:
Ques. 3d. Would "be baptized because of the. remission of sins," be a fair translation?
........ That would be as the word "because" is understood. If it respect the enjoyment of this blissful privilege, it would mean the same with for, or in order to; but,
if for the possession or procurement of the benefit, it would then imply something of a mercenary import; such as purchase or interest.
Ques. 4th. Whether is the believer's baptism expressive of his death to sin, or of a death by sin already endured by his representative?
It appears from the connexion of the 2d. and 3d. verses of Rom. vi. with each other, and with the subsequent context, that it is expressive of the latter; and therefore, ought to have been so translated.
Thus:--"How shall we that have died by sin (not to sin) live any longer therein? Know ye not, that as many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? That like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of tile Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that we should not henceforth serve sin; for he that is dead is freed from sin. Rom. vi. 2-7. And now, believing all this, what do we, in our baptism, but consent to his burial?
That is, to the burial of him who was crucified with Christ; namely, our old man.
Those who RECEIVED Jesus discipled with Him and believed that He was the Son of God where only God can make one a SON.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power (the privilege or capacity) to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: John 1:12
Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. Ac.2:41
The common people heard Jesus, believed in him and therefore JUSTIFIED GOD meaning that they DID NOT REJECT but RECEIVED the counsel of God.
And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. Luke 7:29
Thomas Campbell below notes that:
And now, believing all this, what do we, in our baptism, but consent to his burial?
You have the choice: you can RECEIVE Christ's COUNSEL FOR YOUR LIFE and be baptized FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS or you can believe Max Lucado who somehow gets out of this discussion the dangerous conclusion that:
All they needed to do was to trust him to save them.
All those who believe this are reborn!
Tertullian who proves that "believer's baptism" came from the Cainites, ask a similar question: Chapter II.-The Very Simplicity of God's Means of Working, a Stumbling-Block to the Carnal Mind.
There is absolutely nothing which makes men's minds more obdurate than the simplicity of the divine works which are visible in the act, when compared with the grandeur which is promised thereto in the effect;
I am a deceiver if, on the contrary, it is not from their circumstance, and preparation, and expense, that idols' solemnities or mysteries get their credit and authority built up.
|
First, we should not that RECEIVED does not mean FAITH ONLY or TRUST ONLY. Received is the Greek:Paralambano (g3880) par-al-am-ban'-o; from 3844 and 2983; to receive near, i.e. associate with oneself (in any familiar or intimate act or relation); by anal. to assume an office; fig. to learn: - receive, take (unto, with).
And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them, Matthew 20:17
The Jailer RECEIVED the gospel of Christ and therefore RECEIVED His messengers. His result was to show the fruit of repentance and OBEY their direct command to be BAPTIZED. Washing their wounds did not save him or remit his sins:
And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. Acts 16:33
Receiving Christ Jesus is receiving His WAY. However, this does not DEMAND that one is saved by TRUST ONLY or experience the NEW BIRTH by belief only:
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Col 2:6
Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Col 2:7
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. Col 2:8
Therefore, one has to disciple with Christ through the Word and walk in His shoes to have the power to be a son of God.
When Philip preached the GOSPEL to the eunuch he understood that baptism was necessary. Therefore, RECEIVING CHRIST through teaching gave him the POWER but the power does not get the job done:
And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? Acts 8:36
And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Acts 8:37
Faith in Jesus as God's Son (meaning God) gave the eunuch THE POWER TO BECOME the son of God. If he believed and had the POWER he still could not be a SON without baptism.
Paul had the POWER over others but this did not mean that the power was exercized:
If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ. 1 Co. 9:12
The same word POWER resides in the Head. However, once again, this POWER is made available only by having FAITH IN THE OPERATION OF GOD.
And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: Col.2:10
In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Col 2:11
Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. Col 2:12
And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; Col 2:13
Again being a companion of Christ and accepting His Word and His Power gives one the power to become a child of God. But the same Paul said that to get IN Christ BY FAITH we have to be baptized:
For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:26
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Gal 3:27Therefore, becoming a SON BY FAITH in Christ is the same as HAVE BEEN baptized into Christ and therefore PUT ON Christ. We are children of God BY FAITH when we ACCEPT THE COUNSEL OF GOD FOR OUR LIVES. This SAVING FAITH means that we HAVE BEEN BAPTIZED into Christ so that He covers us like a GARMENT of fatherhood.
Max Lucado: Jesus says, Listen, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in... Revelation 3:20
This passage has a before and after. First, Jesus Christ is speaking to the CHURCHES. Therefore, He is not speaking of initial salvation.
Second, he DOES NOT accept "just knocking."
Third, note that Christ has an OFFICE: He is the Holy Spirit. And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; Rev 3:14
I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. Rev 3: 15
So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Rev 3: 16
Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: Rev 3: 17
I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. Rev 3: 18
As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Rev 3: 19
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. Rev 3: 20
To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. Rev 3: 21
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. Rev 3: 22
Like all of Max's proof text, they apply to those who are already saved.
Rubel Shelly notes of one passage used for "works salvation": They are Paul's Spirit-given words, but they are not his instructions to lost persons who want to be saved. They are a challenge to godly believers that they should, by their devoted walk with Christ, "continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose" (Phil.2:12-13).
And Tertullian notes of Christ's invitation to those who are believers under trial:
For the people, after crossing the sea, and being carried about in the desert during forty years, although they were there nourished with divine supplies, nevertheless were more mindful of their belly and their gullet than of God.
Thereupon the Lord, driven apart into desert places after baptism, showed, by maintaining a fast of forty days, that the man of God lives "not by bread alone," but "by the word of God; " and that temptations incident to fulness or immoderation of appetite are shattered by abstinence.
Therefore, blessed ones, whom the grace of God awaits, when you ascend from that most sacred font of your new birth, and spread your hands for the first time in the house of your mothe, together with your brethren, ask from the Father, ask from the Lord, that His own specialties of grace and distributions of gifts may be supplied you. "Ask," saith He, "and ye shall receive."
Well, you have asked, and have received; you have knocked, and it has been opened to you. Only, I pray that, when you are asking, you be mindful likewise of Tertullian the sinner.
Max Lucado: With all of my heart, I urge you to accept God's destiny for your life. I urge you to get on board with Christ. According to the Bible, "Jesus is the only one who can save people. His name is the only power in the world that has been given to save people. We must be saved through him" (Acts 4:12).
We need to repeat the facts about ACCEPTING GOD'S DESTINY because if you don't HANG Christ's words together then you will probably HANG like Judas.
Luke 7:30
In the same way, the Hebrews REJECTED the Book of the Covenant of Grace at Mount Sinai. They turned back to musical idolatry and therefore despised God by despising His Word. The PROOF IN THE PUDDING was that God abandoned them to the BOOK OF THE LAW and later to musicians to lead them into captivity and death;
The Baptist baptism of Max Lucado is based on the false dogma that the Great Commission was only to the Jews. The SECOND baptism would be the Gnostic SPIRIT ONLY baptism which must be EXPERIENCED before one can go down into the depths of water baptism.
However, this must deliberately skip some important Biblical resource: For instance,
Too bad for false teachers: Simeon was ready to die because he saw Jesus to be:
For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Luke 2:30
Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; Luke 2:31
A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. Luke 2:32
To find Jesus we have to GO OUTSIDE THE CAMP. Therefore, the structural tabernacle of David was a CARNAL type just like ALL nations. However, the Spiritual house was identical to what God promised David: to build a FAMILY but not a HOUSE made with human hands:
Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. Acts 15:14
And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, Acts 15:15
After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: Acts 15:16
That the residue (remnant) of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. Acts 15:17
Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world. Acts 15:18
While Peter was reluctant to go to the Gentiles for fear of the Jews, he understood at Pentecost that the call to repentance and baptism was NOT just to the Jews but to all of those whom God would call through preaching and all of those who would RESPOND or call upon the name of God.
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38
For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. Acts 2:39
The Old Covenant of Book of the Law was added because of transgression along with the kings, kingdom, physical temple, animal sacrifices.
Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers, in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. Heb.8:9
Epilambanomai (g1949) ep-ee-lam-ban'-om-ahee; mid. from 1909 and 2983; to seize (for help, injury, attainment or any other purpose; lit. or fig.): - catch, lay hold (up-) on, take (by, hold of, on).
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: Heb 8:10
And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. Heb 8:11
For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. Heb 8:12
This was prophetic of the Spiritual Israel who come into Christ ONLY at the time and place of water baptism. The result is that God will give each BROTHER a new spirit, A holy spirit or a clear conscience.
For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:26
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Gal 3:27Again Max Lucado: With all of my heart, I urge you to accept God's destiny for your life
The DESTINY of God is conditional: if you accept Him, believe in Him and are Baptized INTO Him then you are IN Christ and therefore a child of God. Counsel is:
Boule (g1012) boo-lay'; from 1014; volition, i.e. (obj.) ADVICE, or (by impl.) purpose: - / ADVISE, counsel, will.
God predestinated us to accept His Counsel and accept water baptism which determines the ETERNAL DESTINY of our souls. However, we can REJECT God's plan made for us:
In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: Ep.1:11
God's plan was to WORK His Own Operation at the Laver. The denial of the power of water baptism clearly seems to be the MARK of those who from old rejected the counsel of God for their lives.
Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. Col 2:12
However, Max insists that God's OWN WILL is not his COUNSEL which he preaches to the whole world:
All they needed to do was to trust him to save them.
All those who believe this are reborn! It is clear that Max's WILL and COUNSEL directly contradicts GOD'S OWN PREDESTINATED WILL to save ONLY THOSE who RECEIVE Christ to the extent of following Him to be EMPALED alongside Christ and be BURIED with Christ.
God chose to dwell in a HUMAN BODY composed almost entirely of WATER. When He POURED OUT that water and blood he intimately connected the PREDESTINATED Will of God who as Word created all things IN the water and OUT of the water.
God's DESTINY is tied up in receiving only the HUMBLE who will just accept His counsel for their lives and just DO what Jesus commands.
Max Lucado and the Baptists at the Red Sea:
The Israelites were between an army and the deep blue sea: they knew that they could not save themselves. So, rather than obey God in the TYPE of baptism they just CALLED UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD:
And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the Lord. Exod 14:10
Caaq (g6817) tsaw-ak'; a prim. root; to shriek; (by impl.) to proclaim (an assembly): - * at all, call together, cry (out), gather (selves) (together).
Max and the Baptists agreed: wow, go down into the BYTHUS or depths of the Red Sea to be drowned by God? So, Faith Only Moses had NO faith:
And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever Exod 14:13
While Max demands to see the GRACE of God just by prayer or calling, God (Jesus Christ) issued a direct command which refutes what is truly FAITHLESNESS and DESPISING the will og God:
And the Lord said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward: Exod 14:15
But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea. Exod 14:16
Faith only is FAITHLESSNESS: despising the will of God and guaranteeing that the Old Man of Sin will not be left in the tomb.
You see, FAITH makes sure that only the OLD MAN is drowned as sin is put on the OLD side of the water. The New Faith put its trust in GOD. What comes out on the other side is a Spirit Guided new person walking in the Light of Christ the Pillar and drinking from Christ the Rock.
The CALVINIST or Baptist SINNER'S PRAYER is not the COUNSEL OF GOD. It is not IN Scripture and is Anti-Christian and Anti-Biblical.
Max Lucado: Would you let him save you? This is the most important decision you will ever make. Why don't you give your heart to him right now? Admit your need. Agree with his work.
Accept his gift. Go to God in prayer and tell him, "I am a sinner in need of grace. I believe that Jesus died for me on the cross.
I accept your offer of salvation."
It's a simple prayer with eternal results. That is a fact: if you depend on the PRAYER to save you it is because the word RECEIVED is not mistranslated: it is simply twisted into meaning the TRUST which automatically makes one a SON OF GOD. We have shown that this is anti-scriptural or non-scriptural and therefore if you PRAY the prayer of faith you REJECT THE COUNSEL OF GOD making you less important than sinners who RECEIVED Christ by BEING BAPTIZED.
And the Lord said unto Max, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward: Exod 14:15
But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea. Exod 14:16
If you don't do that, Max, the people you are misguiding will be destroyed by and with the Egyptians who are equated to the Babylonians, Canaanites, Jerusalem and Sodomites.
This is the old SINNER'S PRAYER which means that we are SAVED BY PRAYER. However, this ignores the large body of Biblical teaching which associates baptism with salvation and the remission of sins BECAUSE we have faith in the OPERATION OF GOD which He performs ONLY at the time and place of water baptism.
Now that you are A CHILD OF GOD by trust or prayer, baptism is something you do but we see a contradiction here as throughout this CREED.
Max Lucado: Once you've placed your faith in Christ, I urge you to take three steps. You'll find them easy to remember. Just think of these three words (they each start with b): baptism, Bible, and belong.
Baptism demonstrates and celebrates our decision to follow Jesus.
Our immersion into water symbolizes our immersion into God's grace. Just as water cleanses the body, so grace cleanses the soul. Jesus said,
"Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved" (Mark 16:16).
But, Paul uses the example of the Red Sea. Their baptism did not SYMBOLIZE their decision to follow Moses an inferior type of Christ. Remember?
And the Lord said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward: Exod 14:15
But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea. Exod 14:16
In Hebrews 11 all acts of faith are ACTIVE VERBS:
By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned. Heb.11:29
MOREOVER, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 1 Cor 10:1
And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 1 Cor 10:2
They were not safe until they had PASSED through the Sea. Over the Sea was hoovering the CLOUD representing Christ. In water baptism Christ COVERS us and hide us from sin and Satan.
When one obeys by faith and jumps out of the way of a speeding car, their act IS NOT A CELEBRATION of Faith Only. Only on the other side of baptism:
And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 1 Cor 10:3
And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. 1 Cor 10:4
Contradicting Max Lucado, all of Scripture says that BAPTISM is God's MEANS just as surely as the human body of God was His MEANS to our salvation.
John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Mk.1:4
And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; Lu.3:3
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Mark 16:16
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for (in order to) the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Ac.2:38
And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Ac.22:16
The like figure (The ARK) whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the REQUEST FOR a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: 1Peter 3:21
Max Lucado: When the apostle Paul became a believer, he was asked this question:
"Now, why wait any longer? Get up, be baptized, and wash your sins away,
trusting in him to save you" (Acts 22:16).
Paul responded by being baptized immediately. You can, too.The people at the Red Sea trusted God to save them but Moses was a type of MAX who said: "Just stand still and watch God save us." However, God asked, why are you WHINING to me? I have shown you how you can be Saved by Faith: just raise your hand and MARCH into the dangerous waters of death.
No Jew ever thought that their walking through the Red Sea was what CAUSED the death- dealing waves to abate. No one believes that their own effort can save them. And NO ONE who even minimizes the OPERATION OF GOD in baptism has even MINIMAL faith in the TRUE Lord Jesus Christ Who is our superior Moses.
BELIEVERS are baptized believers:
And all that believed were together, and had all things common; Ac.2:44
There is nothing said about Paul BECOMING A BELIEVER (I.e. Saved). Nor is there anything which can be translated as TRUSTING IN HIM TO SAVE YOU. All of the major translations read:
And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Acts 22:16
And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. Ac.9:6
|
The only thing Paul was told to do was to BE BAPTIZED. Only then would his SPIRITUAL SIGHT be restored as it never was to the Jews in 2 Cor. 3.And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. Acts 9:17
And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. Acts 9:18
Consistent with Acts 2:38 and 1 Peter 3:21 WASHING AWAY OF SINS comes AFTER baptism. If one is saved by TRUST ONLY or PRAYER ONLY then one is saved while STILL IN THEIR SINS. The gift of the Holy Spirit or a "clear conscience" is the ability to clearly hear the Word of God. When Paul needed further instruction Jesus of Nazareth appeared to him in the Spirit.
Righteousness in Hebrew does not mean remission of sins or salvation or being IN Christ or regeneration of a new birth:
Paul did not teach justification by FAITH ONLY. Genesis 26:5 defines justification by faith as keeping God's commandments each and every time.
FAITH ONLY does not RECONCILE.
No one receives the ATONEMENT by FAITH ONLY.
Faith Only does not make us DEAD to SIN but makes us aware of sin. This awareness gives us the access to God because He approves our faith in Him.
Faith only never SUBMITS to that "form of doctrine" but insists on being RESURRECTED prior to BURIAL.
Faith only is not a LIKENESS of being PLANTED in the waters of baptism.
Therefore, faith only does not show FAITH in the death of Christ.
No one is promised a resurrection like that of Christ by FAITH ONLY.
No one is promised a crucifixion with Christ by faith only.
No one is promised that the old BODY OF SIN will be destroyed by faith only.
Faith only is never said to SLAY the old man of sin.
FAITH ONLY does not answer to the Ark and Red Sea as FIGURES.
FAITH in God meant faith inside of the ARK and it was not FAITH ONLY.
So, you see the subject is not FAITH ONLY but a system of Faith.
Faith Only is never said to put one INTO Christ where redemption is found.
Faith only never gives one A holy spirit o a co-perception with Christ.
No one is every said to get INTO Christ by FAITH ONLY. And if you are not BAPTIZED INTO Christ then you CANNOT get into GOD.
Therefore, the dogma of Max Lucado is that of Believer's Baptism which was adopted by the Baptists after Zwingli to accommodate Calvinism. Believer's baptism is a form of pagan baptism.
